A natural expression for her. The flowers seemed bright all around her, she ignored the fact that it seemed to be because of her presence. She considered it natural by now, didn't pay it much attention, although the connection to them would never truly fade. She soon crouched down by a flower bed and stroked over soft petals with her fingers. The voices, or thoughts, became clearer to her and she took a moment to listen to them. It was a different sensation from speaking to a human. A human was much more complex, not that plants where simple things too. They witnessed more than one could guess, especially trees.
A faint sigh escaped her and then she lowered her eyes, chin lowering as well, shrouding her face for a moment and her thoughts turned to her mother. A strong gentle woman, she had seen a lot as well and Raine wanted nothing more than to take that pain all away. Then a faint shrug and she pulled her fingers back, leaving the flower to grow in its natural surroundings, or as natural one could call this place. She stared at the park, a light twinge of disgust on her features. The dreams of a place where everything grew like it should, those she liked best, like it should be. This place was just a mockery. Although she supposed it was better than nothing at all. She moved her body to another place, fingers tracing over leaves and the rough bark of trees.
She heard footsteps behind her. She turned her head, a smile on her features appearing again "Oh, hello there." She greeted the person, lifting her head lightly the next moment. Her hands clasping in front of her chest "Can I help you with something?" She questioned the next moment, usually none approached her unless they needed something. She also hadn't made a date with anyone, she recalled. So she did the thing first that came into her mind and be polite. [/style] |

Eluard was on a wooden bench, his eyes barely open in the bright sunlight. There was something about daylight that resonated with his character in a way that impacted it directly, making him remember all of the dreams of his youth as well as the things he stood for, or had tried to defend, since now his moral compass seemed to have taken too much water and became rusty. Whenever he noticed he felt like he was disappointing someone. The smiling face of his lost wife came to mind like she had in a dream he had experienced the previous night. In it, she was forgiving him for a reason inside the dream that even he couldn’t remember and the illusory moment had been so impactful he had woken up with tears in his eyes.
It wasn’t something that happened often. The information dealer could count on both hands the number of times he had ever cried and now that he was awake and simply remembering it, he couldn’t truly connect to the reason behind that emotional overload. And he wouldn’t dwell on it. A strangely serene paced woman walked past him then, apparently swaying to a song of nature only she could hear. The flowers, grass, vines and leaves seemed to vibrate with life and they arrested the gaze of sunlight, shining brightly with all they had in that instant that the woman passed. Eluard felt like he was experiencing a sleep-deprived minor hallucination and all of it was more of a sensation than anything else.
Even though he decided that he had been, indeed, simply experienced a moment of subtle inspiration that made him see things that weren’t exactly there, he couldn’t stop looking after the woman that had passed by his bench. Without thinking, he got up and followed suit at a lazy pace, stopping some distance away from the brunette who lowered onto a patch of flowers and ran her fingers through them. She seemed so queerly enamored with them even Eluard’s florist could agree. At least partially. When she got up (her back was to him) and took a vast look of the park but didn’t exactly notice the stranger staring at her, Eluard took his gaze from her frame. He didn’t want to alert her to his observing gaze, not yet.
She moved away from the flowers and was caressing her way through grass and across trees now. Eluard was walking towards her now, quietly curious about her character. She spun around when he was a few feet away from her and he stopped calmly in his tracks. He realized he was staring too nonchalantly when she assumed he needed something from her. “Perhaps,” he told her without hesitation, his eyes shifting away from her and landing on a random patch of flowers. One of his hands swept towards them. “These flowers. Do you happen to know what they’re called?” There was a pause and then he looked to her again. “It just seems like there isn’t a better person in the world to pose a question like that to. Wouldn’t you agree?”

She knew that the greenery always would find a way to grow whereas no one expected it to grow, even though humans tried to stamp it down here and there. Their need to control some things was always startling to her. The thought also saddened her, because she was one of those who did nearly the same in the end. She needed a roof and four walls like everyone else, at least she let the plants grow unhindered and was annoyed when someone had taken the liberty of removing it for her. The woman pushed some of the hair back that had escaped the twisted braid and continued to ignore everything around her. She certainly looked foolish, considering what it was, or maybe it was bravery.
Nonetheless, when she had become aware of the other presence, she didn't seem startled, nor very afraid. Her eyes still showing the simply curiosity and keeping her stance non-threatening, not that she had plans to do anything, although she would have liked anything to defend herself if the man before her decided that he had no such qualms about not attacking her. Not that she was worried about that, the smile did keep itself on her features after all as she observed him. He seemed.... sad in a way, but she couldn't say why or how and if she had known him better, she would have given him a hug. She thought that he looked like he needed one, badly. He spoke in reply to her question and she made a soft sound in the back of her throat in reply, showing that she was willing to listen to whatever he wanted to ask or wanted from her.
Her gaze turned to the flowers as well and she looked them over once more, the smile curling the corners of her mouth again "They're mostly lilies." She answered, before her smile turned in an almost embarrassed one and she shrugged a shoulder "I don't know their exact names, though." She of course had the basic schooling, even though her mother had been extremely poor, she had tried to give her daughter the best she could afford. She had no reason to complain, but nonetheless she became a bit more guarded, hoping that he wouldn't know that she never had finished high school, although she had wanted to. But Raine was content with her life now though, she could work in her small flower-shop and even sell them on the streets and meet with many interesting people.
A faint shrug and she looked away, hiding some of the frustration that she harbored. She had somewhat expected to hear the question "Maybe." She agreed, before taking a deep breath and looking toward the man again. She forced a small teasing smile, wondering for a moment if he knew more than he let on. She tried to blame it on the paranoia, trying to shake away the feeling "You don't seem like the type to be very interested in flowers." She spoke lightly. At least he didn't look like one of these scientists that her mother had warned her about. [/style] |

Eluard couldn’t sense her discomfort through the polite smile she displayed. The tiny sigh she greeted his curiosity with, however, did suggest she didn’t enjoy the interruption but would entertain it regardless. He was surprised to hear that she knew less about the flowers than he did, for he couldn’t fathom why she would feign ignorance on such a topic. The Trumpet and Aurelian lilies nested between gatherings of purple Garden Verbenas stared at him almost accusingly. The only reason he knew what they were was because once upon a time he had taken to communicating to his future wife through flower code, sending her signals of his deepening affection though the type of flowers he offered her. If he were a different person he probably wouldn’t have remembered anything about them so many years later.
The only people who knew a lot about flower names were the passionate, collectors or people whose jobs depended on it, as such, her lack of know-about could hardly emphasize any lack of education. His next question received a more unusual reply however. Eluard had asked it like he did because she had appeared quite in love with the nature around her but her manner of reply and the strange subtle hallucination he had experienced earlier unnerved him now and gave him the feeling there could be a deeper meaning to it all. Or perhaps he was being quite paranoid again. It happened often.
Her observation prompted a reserved smile and a brief close of his eyes. Eluard turned from her, placed his hands behind his back and stared far at the winding paths that crossed the park. “What type of person do I seem like then?” There was a hint of amusement in his tone as well as more than a little curiosity for her impression. He sat there, quiet, proper, looking far too thoughtfully into the distance. “There’s a storm coming,” he added some time after, in a tone that wasn’t quite as lighthearted. True enough, dark clouds were gathering in the distance and would be upon them more quickly than one would expect.
Somehow today Eluard felt he wouldn’t mind getting drenched as he walked through rain and thunder.

She took care of them the most, knew nearly everything about them and could talk hours then. She easily could learn their names though, as if to prove it she pointed to one of the flowers who nearly stood in the back, almost always forgotten "I know the Angelica, mostly because no one pays attention to... it." The pause was short, she had to restrain herself by not giving the plant a gender, as if it where a person, most where bothered by this and looked at her strangely. It was to say that she wanted to avoid it at the moment.
A faint look as she looked for another plant that she remembered from the time that her mother had taught her everything that there was to know about them, or at least attempted to. She hadn't been very interested in plants back then, instead preferred to look at any relative handsome boys that walked past. What could she say? She had been a teenager then. Even though the elder woman didn't have the connection that her mother had "Over there is Baby's Breath." She knew some of the language, but most of the time it just passed over her head and let her remain clueless. This time another small smile appeared, maybe sensing some of the discomfort that he felt, or the thoughts he harbored "So I'm not entirely clueless." Another hint of embarrassment and a light shrug of the shoulders as she brushed some of her hair back behind her ear.
Raine drew back, catching the shift in emotion and she bit her lower lip, looking at him from lowered eyelids "Did I say something wrong?" She breathed, maybe too soft to be heard? She didn't know, she knew though that she looked worried and her hands untangled themselves, as if they wanted nothing more to grab and let her apologize. A question was aimed her way and she looked him over once more, that was something she hopefully could answer. A faint tilt of the head, she wasn't sure if she should....
Then a faint noise escaped her throat, deciding to tell what she gathered so far "I guess... that you're a very... closed person." She started, looking down and wondering if she would cross any lines unconsciously again. Well, there was only one way to find out so she could avoid them in the future. A light look at her fingers "Maybe you've lost someone close to you?" She questioned, then a small daring glance upward "But you're not.... bad, you seem like you want to be.." She continued, shaking her head almost roughly and then making an almost helpless gesture, not knowing how to say what she wanted to "No, certainly not that..." She instead said. Then an almost teasing glint appeared in her eyes, not wanting to continue on this subject anymore. She didn't want any questions in turn, after all "And certainly a person I'll manage to tease a smile from." A quiet confidence.
She hadn't noticed and smiled puzzled "Indeed." She confirmed, a slight shiver running over her frame. She could handle rain, but thunder? She had never liked that. She checked if she had something on her to protect herself from the coming ominous clouds, then checked her surroundings for any sort of cover. She soon stopped though, she wouldn't appear as a coward, she wasn't some... wasn't some Damsel in Distress! Although of course no one would think her one, right? Right. [/style] |

The woman chose to prove she did know more about the flowers in the park’s garden than had been initially apparent. “I never said you were clueless,” he expressed after following her gaze to the various flowers she pointed out. One thing was for sure, he didn’t care about flowers at all. Having plants or animals in the house would be more of a nuisance than anything else, so Eluard wouldn’t be joining Save the Planet or PETA anytime soon. Quite out of the blue, he was being asked if anything was wrong and he looked to her, eyebrows arched slightly. “No, why do you ask?” as far as he could tell he wasn’t expressive enough for her to sense his inner mood shifts and the fact that she appeared to do so only unnerved him further on the inside.
She decided to share her impressions about his character and the first assessment made the distant look in his eyes deepen. What a randomly correct impression. Was she actually guessing or could she read it in him so plainly? Eluard’s gaze lowered a little. The next question, however, made his gaze jerk back in her direction, eyes slightly wider than usual. That wasn’t a guess anymore, there was no way she could tell that just from looking at him. He continued to stare with growing agitation as more very insightful, very private parts of his being were being explored as if she’d just read his autobiography and was offering comments on what she had found there.
By the time she made it to commenting about the incoming change in weather conditions, Eluard was anything but smiling. His eyes were on her fully. “You’re a mutant,” he stated, so convinced it made him pale a little. Maybe she could read his thoughts or sense every ripple of emotion that happened within him, or something even more complex than that. Whatever the case, her insights unnerved him and if it was some form of natural ability it would be even more unsettling.
Eluard finally looked away and added more quietly towards the storm-clouds. “Not that it would be a bad thing.” Another risk statement, apparently he was in the habit of distributing them en masse lately. Then, quite suddenly, he calmed down and gave a thought to her assessments, pointedly staying away from her question. “So. Since you seems to know quite so much about me without even asking, does it bother you?” It was a vague question, so he clarified a little. “Would a troublesome person like me be a bother to you?” Because that was the best term to describe him.
Nothing appeared to truly please him, he was obsessed with his pursuits, he walked a fine line between moral duty and ambitious corruption and he would prove to be a real pest when trying to get to know truly because he liked to keep people out. In short: difficult, troublesome, tiresome as well, quite probably.

She agreed, before laughing faintly, sounding a bit embarrassed about herself "I just wanted to prove it to myself, again.." She stared at him for a moment, before looking away and still looking embarrassed "Well, you really looked to be in deep thoughts just now..." A faint shrug of the shoulders and then she fell silent, fingers that had intertwined tightening their grip on each other, somewhat nervous. She now thought that she had said something wrong for sure now. Raine was cursing her mouth, for running away with her and asking questions that most likely put a lot of people in uncomfortable situations. She gazed away then, still cursing herself.
She noticed the reaction and looked even worse for it, biting her lower lip even harder. The distant look was bad enough, but when she saw it worsen. Well, she wished desperately that a hole opened up beneath her and swallowed her whole "I'm sorry." She offered hurriedly, cheeks still red and she cleared her throat almost awkwardly "I... I shouldn't have said that.." Some of her muscles tensing, preparing for an attack if he suddenly decided that he didn't like what she said, but nothing happened however and Raine decided that she was maybe correct on her assessment that he wasn't as bad at first glance. Or well... she didn't know him well enough to be entirely sure. She would have to see and discover more, if he allowed her to do so. He was almost like a puzzle that she wanted to solve.
Then he spoke and Raine winced, giving away the reply instantly and she paled herself, wide green eyes staring at him and unconsciously taking a step back. She smiled, a little shaky in nature, after a while though and crouched by the flowerbeds again and picked one from the countless and nodded her head "I guess so.." She breathed, pretending that this was still a normal conversation and not one that had her entire being uncovered. She had hoped it would remain a secret for longer. She looked at him again, he really didn't look like one of those types who would drag her to the labs and when she straightened. She held the vibrant flower out to him, maybe a peace offering for her earlier words. Or maybe even a faint effort to tell her what her ability entailed. She wasn't sure herself.
Raine shrugged her shoulders faintly "Most would disagree with you there." She said softly. She knew that her questions was avoided, but tactfully didn't comment on it. She didn't want to cause more of the uncomfortable feeling in him. She listened when he spoke and hummed ever so faintly, then shook her head ever so lightly "No." She replied, sounding sure of herself once more "Now, if you had been someone else.." And she gave the impression she was talking about someone with a bad personality "That would've been a different story." A faint shrug. She wondered if she could guess what he would think now, most likely how naive she seemed, for trusting anyone so plainly. In fact, she only appeared that way, yes, she trusted quickly but also held everyone at a distance without them noticing, at least most of the time.
Once more a faint shrug raised her shoulders "A bother?" a slight smile "No, I welcome the company, if you could bear with mine.." [/style] |

The brunette had a very gentle and shy nature about her and she also appeared to care a great deal about how others viewed her. That always meant the avoidance of conflict and a general people pleaser attitude, which made her appear sweet and harmless, until something was serious enough that she wasn’t. Eluard considered her from thoughtful eyes, for the moment trying to discern if it could be an elaborate act shrouding unknown intentions, but her slight brushes with embarrassment seemed a little too masterfully played if they weren’t genuine.
She was quick to apologize when noting his subtle discomfort and he gave her an easy smile. “Don’t worry about it. I reserve the right to not answer your questions, after all.” Curiosity didn’t hurt, not in his case, but it could get disappointed. However, there was something else that did prologue his discomfort – the nature of her mutation, which wasn’t entirely obvious to him yet. Her reaction told him that he’d hit a bulls-eye and that in itself allowed some manner of calm to return to him. What if she had been a DNCS employee, just giving him the wrong impression? – It was in Eluard’s nature to consider all possible negative scenarios of any situation. Luckily, that wasn’t the case, and he was rapidly growing more interesting in being truthful with her.
Lowering to the path of flowers, she selected one and admitted to what her reaction had already exposed. The flower was extended to him and he took it with slight hesitation, half-expecting it to have been turned into a bomb or something for having revealed her so nonchalantly, but nothing happened and he turned the stem in his fingers, eyes never leaving from her. “I know,” he told her when she informed that the majority of the populace would disagree with his words. When she decided with a certain confidence that whatever she was in him didn’t bother her, Eluard couldn’t help raising a hand to splay it over his eyes. His days lately seemed to be one strange occurrence after another and now some woman he had approached randomly in the park was sure, due to her power probably, that she could trust him with her secret and that she believed In whatever good side she saw in him.
Eluard released a huff of amusement at her words. It sounded like a promise to be just as troublesome a character. He looked to her through the gaps in the fingers he had on his face and slowly lowered the hand as well. “You have me at a disadvantage,” he told her, seeming both amused and perplexed by the whole situation. “Because I don’t know anything about you, other than the fact you seem quite intuitive about everything that has to do with me.” His eyes narrowed just a little, but it was more out of being intimidated than trying to have that effect on her.
He took a look around, to make sure no one was near enough to them to overhear. “I search for mutants like you, you know.” Eluard sighed, allowing himself to relax more properly. “I usually offer them a place to hide, away from the public record, and a number where they can contact me at…” His gaze went back to the approaching dark clouds and he felt very detached from his usual detached attitude towards discussing this matter. Maybe fatigue from all of his latest encounters was finally catching up to him. After a pause, he looked to her again. “I don’t believe I’ve caught your name.” He gave her a tiny half-smile. “I’m Eluard.”

She never had been good in fooling anyone, although she wouldn't lie and deny that she hadn't fooled her mother once or twice when she had went out to go on a date, even though her mother had disliked it and had warned her about such foolishness, although Raine couldn't deny that the woman never had been too strict and most of the time allowed her to do what she wanted. When Raine looked back, she could understand the older woman's fear better. The streets weren't always the safest place around, but luckily she had avoided most of it and never had been personally bothered. She determinedly shoved the thought of that one man away, barely kept from shivering ever so faintly.
Some of her worries seemed to ease and she nodded her head faintly, smile curving her mouth upward again "True." She spoke lightly, letting it reassure her for the moment. She maybe knew that while she had touched something, that she was at least forgiven at the moment. She wondered how he had spotted so quickly that she was.... different from normal humans, but then her eyes turned to the flowers and she nearly snorted. Well, it wasn't exactly something subtle at times. She nonetheless soon pushed all of those thoughts away "That won't stop my curiosity, though." Another faint smile and then a shrug, before she backed off from that subject and let him keep his privacy about it. She had most likely been digging in it enough for today and for as long they would know each other.
A faint smile, saddened by the burden that most mutants carried and looked away. She saw the caution which he took the flower with and that made the smile disappear completely. He soon agreed to her, most likely finding that the flower hadn't been tampered with. He only would notice it a few days later if he didn't throw it away, while most started to wither the minute they had been separated from the ground, this one would survive longer because of her lingering presence on it. It was something that she couldn't control, hadn't even attempted to do so. His next reaction made her head lift again in a curious way, seeing that he placed a hand in front of his eyes and made her nearly lean forward, the question if he was alright resting on the tip of her tongue.
He pulled himself together though and she leaned back, especially when he looked at her again. He had such curious eyes, she decided upon. They looked like a sky that was freshly touched by the rising sun, after the orange and red had faded and left the blue to its reign. A faint smile, maybe a touch bewildered "I'm sorry." She murmured, even managing to sound sincere, not that she wasn't "It isn't only you." She slapped a hand in front of her mouth then, eyes widening slightly and then a faint embarrassed smile again when she lowered the limb back to her side and then a faint laugh "I just... am a good judge of character..?" She offered faintly, hopefully also making it clear that reading thoughts or emotions wasn't her forte. Although maybe the greenery around her had to do something with it. Plants were often underestimated after all.
Raine lifted her head again, betraying curiosity once more as she politely listened to what he said. A smile again and she brushed her hair back yet again "Well.." She spoke lightly "I don't have too much trouble in that aspect.." A faint chuckle and she shrugged her shoulders again "Although I won't deny the number, although I do hope that a date is not the next thing on your list." She teased him. He spoke that he still didn't know her name and then he spoke his. Eluard. What a... strange name, but not bad "Raine." She replied, placing her arms behind her back again "It's a pleasure to meet you." [/style] |

As it stood, her guesswork about his character and apparently ability to sense the subtlety of his emotional shifts were the reason he thought her a mutant. He didn’t connect the flower she gave him to any form of mutation, he couldn’t, the lead he was offered was much too vague. A light, tentative smile was his reply to her professed curiosity. “I can understand that, at least.” Being someone who pried was in his nature, in the very foundation of how he interacted with people. Eluard always wanted to know too much, to see deeper than anyone else, to understand how others ticked. It was a problem at times. Especially when the doors to insight were slammed in his face. Luckily, it didn’t occur often. The information dealer had powers of persuasion and patience on his side.
She stared at him and he stared back after lowering the hand from obscuring his gaze. She was a good judge of character? That was a bit of an understatement, considering she’d guessed something that even he didn’t quite understand in himself. “It’s not linked to your mutation?” There was a hint of surprise in his voice. Also, expectation. If it really was just her natural intuition, he had to praise her for it, but at the same time could relax that she wasn’t reading his thoughts or feelings. Maybe he was just becoming more transparent these days?
She didn’t seem overly concerned by the threat mutants faced, or perhaps she was just unaware or had connections he didn’t know of. “There’s never enough caution.” At least, not in his book. Being connected to other mutants couldn’t harm, could it?
Her choice of tease threw him, mostly because he didn’t know how to react. Instead of awkward embarrassment, however, he linked his hands behind his back and responded in a leveled tone. “I assure you my intentions are purely professional. I do not extend this offer of contact and affiliation lightly. We live in dangerous times and you never know when you’ll meet someone who would do you harm. It serves to have as many allies as possible.” Eluard didn’t dabble in teasing random people, unless they somehow inspired it in him and this situation did not. The sun was obscured in the sky and the first rain drops were starting to fall.
“I expect it’s good to meet you as well, Raine.” A blitz of lightning veined through the gathering gloom. “I believe we should seek shelter. I’m not as concerned with the rain as I am with the lightning.” Eluard had an irrational fear of the improbable. Even if the chance of getting struck by lightning wasn’t great, the less something seemed likely to happen, the more often it did, around him. “Would you care to join me for some tea? Perhaps we can find a secluded corner and we can discuss our situation more.” And by “situation” he meant the fact that she was a mutant and he was someone who wanted to befriend them.

She preferred that they told her on their own free will, but sometimes their pain seemed so clear to her that she couldn't help but commenting on it. He was such a character, and maybe she had better kept her silence about that. He clearly was uncomfortable about it, even more than others. She shook it away, she couldn't change it anymore, what happened had happened and there was no use in yearning for the ability to turn time back and change what she had done. Nonetheless she also knew that sometimes it would come in handy. Then those thoughts where brushed away as well.
A faint smile appeared on her features and then she looked away, not knowing what she had to say in reply. She could keep saying that she was sorry, but that only would tire the both of them to boredom and once was in her eyes enough. Her green eyes then observed the ground, before flickering upward again, to look in his face.
She heard the surprise in his voice and blushed anew, hating that she couldn't give a clear answer and she shook her head lightly "I don't think it's related." She instead said in reply and her arms wrapped around her shape, searching comfort and defense on an unconscious level. She never had spoken so openly about her 'otherness' that she had realized she had early on, and learned early on that she had to keep silent about unless she wanted to get kidnapped and suffer like her mother had done.
Raine lifted her head to the side, blinking in his direction "Hmm..." She hummed faintly, then intertwined her fingers behind her back again and smiled faintly "Well, my lack of... caution... has worked so far." She didn't deny that help could be useful though and her next words said so, in a sense "But if you really think it important..."
He didn't react to her tease as she had expected and one almost could pretend that her shoulders slumped in disappointment. He instead assured her that he had no intentions behind the question and she snorted faintly, waving her hand ever so lightly "I'm aware." She told him, trying to keep the teasing at a minimum for now. Her head lifted again though and she smiled, a question in her expression "Has it ever changed then?" She questioned, knowing very well that it wasn't, although mutants indeed had it more difficult than those who where 'normal' "Women always have been in danger."
That's how she didn't drive herself to insanity, pretending that the danger wasn't as dangerous, although she was indeed very aware of it and tried to survive without drawing too much attention to herself. She had seen what they had done to her mother after all, the once so strong woman was but a shadow of her former self. Even Raine herself had faced some trouble with those who wanted to take her away and to the labs, luckily she had always managed to get away in time, a perk of knowing the alleys where those who chased her didn't.
Nonetheless the next words pushed another smile on her face, then he invited her for tea and her eyebrows threatened to rise again "I understand you." A faint shiver ran through her at the sound, before nodding her head faintly "And tea sounds okay." She wasn't sure if there would be many discussing, if he expected her to place everything on the table about herself on the first meeting, he thought wrong. [/style] |
