While his mutation doesn’t do anything noticeable when he’s around humans, it inhibits the manifestation of any mutated DNA-related abilities. Other mutants find that their abilities don’t work if they’re within around 20 meters of Kaien. Invisible mutants suddenly find themselves visible again, mutants with altered physiques (like scale covering, having claws or gills, shapeshifting into a cat, etc) suddenly discover their true appearance if they enter Kaien’s influence bubble. This has led to him being constantly followed around by an annoying mutant with an unfortunate mutation (his skin is green and he’s covered in warts and mucus much like a frog). If someone tries to attack him from a great distance (past the 20 meters), direct powers fail when passing into the influence bubble (like telepathy, telekinesis and other powers intended to affect him directly), this doesn’t apply to having a brick lifted up with telepathic powers and throwing it towards him, the brick continues on its way as intended. Such is the case for a mutated spike, a wave, a gust of wind or anything of the sort. For his power to work, Kaien needs to be conscious, otherwise the inhibitory effect does not happen. Swordsmanship – Kaien is very interested in keeping his enemies within close proximity and has a love of swords. Combining the two led to learning how to wield a katana with some skill. Pistol – Kaien carries around a small pistol he’s not very good at aiming with. He only resorts to it when the enemy constantly keeps him at bay. ✖ Personality Temperamental and prideful, Kaien is easy enough to anger if you can find out what gets him biting and quick to act on it. He’ll be rude, confrontational and persistent with his enemies, only backing down in face of obvious incoming defeat and sometimes not even then. He’s more likely to die than beg for his life and it almost happened once, situation he escaped from by pure luck. Because it happened, he’s become a bit more mindful about how he approaches battles with obviously dangerous opponents. Vengeful, Kaien could hold a grudge and take it to his grave, incapable of forgiving the people who betray or wrong him willingly. Cold and opportunistic, Kaien doesn’t give much thought to how his words or actions negatively impact other people, especially if they stand in his way in any circumstance. He’ll do nearly anything to achieve his goals and he’ll rarely hesitate to hurt by standers along the way if they don’t “step aside.” Normally, he doesn’t like involving outsiders in his business and most people get a warning before they’re about to be dragged into something unpleasant. If you’re just an ignorant by stander and have nothing against him, it’s likely Kaien will make a little effort to keep from involving you in a dangerous situation, but only a little. He rarely carters to stupidity however and provocation of any manner can earn someone unwanted attention. Judgemental to core, the raven haired young man considers it his duty to punish the unjust, the vile and the outright monstrous. He won’t tolerate “sinners” of any kind and makes it his business to eliminate them. It can be anyone, from a bank robber to a rampaging mutant to operators trying to kidnap an innocent mutant kid. Whoever appears to be “in the wrong” by him will have found an enemy. Sort of a lone wolf, he doesn’t like working in groups and doesn’t pertain to any. Kaien is hard to warm up to others, hard to come to trust and even harder to get close to truly, but he does have a soft spot for honest people, small children and animals. More of an actions than a words man, he’s not very talkative but doesn’t avoid conversation. Quite direct, he’ll rarely withhold thoughts, to the point he appears rude through brutal honesty. He’s not fond of people who like to play games and beating around the bush can easily lose his attention. He doesn’t give a dirty boot about the impression he’s leaving and has a little dark place in his heart for liars and manipulators. Kaien won’t be caught dead trying to maintain friendly relations with someone whose intentions he’s clearly questioning, more ready to make an enemy than stain his pride with an alliance bred of cowardice. Oftentimes quite fierce and merciless in his personal pursuit of the people who killed his younger sister, he can turn into an unfeeling, uncaring beast towards anyone who seems involved with the matter or the people responsible. Other people’s struggles are none of his business and he’s not only to show sympathy to people in difficulty. If they’re victims of someone’s oppression, he may interfere, but if they’re just stuck in their own uselessness then he won’t spare them a glance. ✖ History Kaien was born in a big city, the son of an actress and a race car driver. His mother suffered post-natal depression and it didn’t go away as doctors expected, instead stretching on for a few years. From the very beginning he had been an unexpected and (at the time) undesired addition to the young couple, at least as far as his mother was concerned. The sudden pregnancy interrupted the twenty year old actress’s blossoming career and made her marry a man she didn’t feel right having beside her in the long run. It didn’t help her bitterness that he convinced her to keep the baby despite her contemplating an abortion. Riddled with regret, with stretch marks on her belly, one day Jane had enough of her “cage”, with a husband she didn’t desire anymore and a kid that had ruined her career and was hindering her path, she left, taking some of her belongings and leaving behind no words of farewell. Kaien was five at the time. Regardless of losing his mother, Kaien was raised in a warm and loving environment by his father. He was a quiet but happy kid, early showing an interest in sports, swords and racing. Around middle school, he started getting bullied for the color of his eyes, a vivid red that made others call him a monster, a creature or other names. The verbal bullying turned into physical bullying in highschool and the quiet kid became a favorite punching bag until one day when he had enough and started fighting back. Due to how often he fought others in highschool and once sending someone in the hospital with a broken nose and arm he got expelled for repeated bad behavior (no one cared it wasn’t his fault and at one point it became his because he deliberately attacked a frequent bully). His father, who was slowly getting alienated from his son (an irritable teenager), couldn’t understand where he had gone wrong. Getting Kaien back into school took some persuasion from his father. It didn’t help that the young man was rude and easily came into conflict with the local highschool kings. He just wouldn’t take their crap like everyone else and that had constant consequences. Despite his difficult time with his peers, he was an essential part of the basketball team and a frequent presence in the fencing club. He could have been president if he had any interest in something like that or wasn’t so far from being a model student to occupy such a position. His first love fell on him in the Library, slipping off the ladder when overreaching for a book too far to the side. Mindy was your typical bookworm, with her head far up in the clouds, terrified of people like him who appeared so rough and violent all the time. The fact that he didn’t immediately strike her for the incident and instead helped her up and offered her the book she had fallen with before wandering off left her blinking with surprise and curiosity. When honest, warm and creative Mindy finally understood the truth about Kaien’s character, she tried to become a more noticeable presence in his path but it wasn’t working much at the beginning. It wasn’t until she was extending a box of house made chocolates towards him with red cheeks while blurting out a confession that he finally noticed. At the end of highschool was the first time his unreliable mother decided to make an appearance again. She tried to talk to Kaien but he never so much as stopped to look at her. In the end, Jane left him a present for his birthday and then never tried to contact him again although she gave him an address where he could reach her if he wanted. His father had re-married after divorcing from Jane and at the age of eleven Kaien had a little half-sister to look after. Kaien never got close to the new female of the house, instead received her constant complaints and nagging about his behavior both from the notices they were receiving from school as well as how he acted at home. The more she chastised him the more he disliked her and the less willing he was to even talk to her. When highschool was over, it was decided that he should go to the army for a year or two to learn some discipline and because he didn’t know what else to do at the time. Reluctantly, he went, leaving Mindy, his father, sister and new mother behind for a time. Over the years, the innocent Mindy became more and more beautiful and she was starting to notice. Suddenly she was drawing more attention than she had been used to, was even proposed a job with a modeling agency. She dropped the glasses in favor of contacts and accepted, while Kaien was away she got introduced to the modeling world. One thing lead to another. She stared partying and drinking without reservation, started forgetting to call Kaien and so often he wasn’t even reachable anyway. One magical winter that Kaien spent huddled together with fellow soldiers around a small fire in a frosty forest filled with wolves, Mindy was slowly falling for her co-star for a winter-wear shoot. When Kaien finally came home, freshly twenty years old, he was greeted by two pieces of news. Firstly, he caught his girlfriend in the arms of another man, right outside in the car, in front of the coffee shop he was coming out of after getting himself a drink to dispel the jet lag felt from travelling back home. She had said she couldn’t come to see him at the airport because she was busy. Her completely unexpected betrayal and open deception caught him so much by surprise that he barely registered the news his father had for him. Apparently, it wasn’t working out with the new wife and Kaien wasn’t the only one who didn’t like her attitude anymore. A new divorce. They were in the process of settling the custody issue for her daughter (Kaien’s half-sister). It would come as a shock to everyone when little Samantha got murdered by a band of mutants while she was away on a trip with Kaien. It all happened very fast in the supermarket they were buying some chips from. The four wanted to rob the place, but started panicking when their powers weren’t working due to Kaien’s presence (who was oblivious to his influence on them) and in their agitation, one of them raised the “just-in-case” pistol he had but the cashier had one as well and the bullet exchange that ensued killed the cashier and Kaien’s sister who got hit by a bullet that ricocheted. The four mutants’ builds, eyes and voices are forever burnt in Kaien’s memory and he’s been hunting them ever since. He collected all of the information he could find on them, even managing to find out who one of them was. Because of his unlawful behavior and murder of one of the mutants in his pursuit of avenging his sister, Kaien was forced to leave the country because everyone knew who he was there and he was causing too much trouble for his father. Now, Kaien is a rogue in the dark, preying on the tainted and living off odd jobs and what he can take from the people he attacks. So far the police haven’t caught up to him but he knows it’s a matter of time before he’s behind bars. ✖ Example I’ll skip. And don’t flail, this character is meant to replace “Dorian Mourey” because I just can’t get back into his character and I’m so sorry Tora because you had a thread with him. :/ I owe you a proper thread or more with any of my other characters or this new one!
