Just a second longer. One more second, and it all would have been over. Her eyes had slammed shut just before she'd intended to finish the act and truly accept that she'd lost - something she thought she had already accepted. Lee had expected Kaien to finish her instantly, but he had tarried, and that delay had allowed her resolve to be shaken. It had almost caused her to hope again, but in the end, and despite all the death she had so recently caused "willingly", the very thought of killing - of even harming - the one person she'd had any positive association with in the hell of the underground had, in her heart, painted her black. Thus, the dagger rose with the feeling that she would do what he had not, and not for her own sake, but for his.
But in this, too, she failed. He stopped her, and as soon as Lee felt Kaien's hands on her wrists, she gasped. As close as he was, her open mouth and shocked expression were clearly visible behind the veil. Her eyes, wide and wet with tears and rain, pierced through the material and into red. When his question came, it took great effort for her to verbalize anything, and at first her mouth moved, but she was mute. Then, finally:
"You... you should survive!"
It was not the most eloquent phrase, but it was something of an accurate summary of the trail of her emotions and the rationalization of her decided actions. As she said it, she tried to overpower him and complete the fatal deed, but she had no chance against his strength. And then, as if her explanation were the catalyst, he forced the dagger to slip from her grasp.
"N-no! W-why?!" she managed after choking back a sob. "I'm... already dead! S-so..."
But whatever Lee's next sentiment was, it was cut off by the White Serpent's staged calamity. The quaking began around them, and her internal quaking continued, as she lost control on the tears and began crying fully. When the "calm before the storm" of collapsing seats occurred, Lee's shaking continued. She was frustrated and worn out from having twice accepted her death without the "payoff", and the tears continued in relative silence. As the seats began collapsing, she lost her strength and started to fall forward into him which, ironically, made it easier for him to collect her up and sweep her aside and out of the path of exploding glass. As he held her tightly and stated that he didn't understand her, she was as limp and as useless as flavorless Jell-o. But she had a response for him.
"I wanted... to save you."
Then, he released her and looked away to take in the chaos going on in the arena. Lee, on the other hand, simply sank into the mud, as if she was completely oblivious to it all, even though she could, if she had been thinking clearly, have directly stated its cause. At this point, though, she hadn't even finished processing that she had been spared and by her blank expression and slack body language, it appeared it would be, at least, a few minutes before she would be able to properly respond to anything.

Kaien couldn’t pause to think about Lee’s words. If he did he would slump into the mud next to her and stare. Luckily, there was something to distract him. For a long moment, his eyes were fixed on MV and his fists were clenched, a familiar sense of hatred washing over him and making him crave flight so that he could go up to the bubble and slaughter the man who had tormented and humiliated him and so many others. The crumbling arena and everyone else in it were lost in a haze for the duration of his fantasy. What brought him back was a chunk of ceiling, under the form of a small rock, colliding with his shoulder. Kaien blinked back to the present and his eyes shot to the left, noticing Lyre beyond the shattered glass wall. His eyes widened with realization. He had completely forgotten that she was fighting on the other side.
Immediately, he turned to Leann. “We need to get out of here,” he pointed out somewhat loudly so she could hear him through the sounds of battle and other noises in the dome. He was in front of her again and his tone softened just slightly. “Can you stand?” Leaning down, he took the hand of her better arm and encouraged her to get up. “Come on, I need to get Lyre.” If she didn’t protest or put up some form of fight, Kaien would drag Lee by the hand, grabbing the sinking katana from the mud as they passed it and promptly handing it to Lee when they reached a disoriented Lyre. All around them, mutants were fighting, some getting interrupted by the loss of their power due to his approach. A dagger zipped past Kaien’s ear, a stray projectile from one of the chaotic matches.
Kaien was shocked to realize how wounded Lyre was. “This will hurt, but we have to make a run for it.” The red-eyed male snatched her from the spot after saying that, one of his arms going around her shoulders and the other lifting her legs from the mud, effectively picking her up to carry her. “Hold on.” His eyes darted left and right and he gestured with his head towards the open path that led to the holding pens. “I know a tunnel that leads out of here. Maybe we can still use it.” He was talking to Lee and Lyre when he had to step aside from getting crushed by more tumbling ceiling. “Follow me.” He told Lee gravely but didn’t have time to wait and see if she would agree or not because more of the structure was coming down. The artificial rain had stopped pouring and now there was nothing but dust coming down in waves, making it hard to see and chocking them.
Kaien tried to breathe less but it was futile. He had already breathed some dust and couldn’t help coughing and sucking in more filthy breaths. He held Lyre tightly and ran through the mud, slipping occasionally but righting himself afterwards. It was a long, hazardous way and chaotic fighting was around every corner, but eventually, they would make it out of the falling underground and into a small park. It was still night and everything was completely dark around them until they reached a bench bathed in lamppost light. Feeling out of breath, Kaien lowered Lyre slowly onto the bench, the arm he had around her shoulders never leaving her as he sat down as well.
“Are you okay?” He whispered in the quiet between their ragged breathing. It was a filler question, she was a mess. “There’s a hospital. Not far from here.” He breathed. “I’ll take you there after I catch my breath.” The tall young man was staring straight ahead and his mind was throbbing with too many thoughts.
Back in the arena, Eluard and his associates were fighting alongside mutants to finish what was left of MV’s men. MV himself had placed a gun to his head, grimed devilishly and pushed the trigger, to die on his own term before Eluard’s men could be upon him after eliminating the last of his guards. The chaos inside continued and after a new set of explosions blasted through the pipeline corridor and started flooding the sewers of the underground dome, Eluard called the retreat. Trying to coordinate the mutants was a dangerous endeavor as many of them were thoroughly confused and fought even his men and amongst themselves. Try as they might, Eluard’s men and even he ended up killing some berserk mutants when simply being on the defensive was too much of a risk.
Before it would be completely lights out, the aware, the clever and the lucky managed to get out of the underground dome, following Eluard and his retreating forces outside. The blond man suffered a broken arm on the last corridor, attacked by a sudden and stray guard and was surprised to get out alive. Before the police and everyone else could realize what had happened in MV’s underground dome, the whole place would be half destroyed and completely flooded. Whoever didn’t manage to get out probably drowned. Eluard was in a dark car, holding his broken arm and absently watching the lights of the city as he was being taken to the hospital, someone sat beside him already trying to help him out of his White Serpent attire and into normal wear.
((If you don’t want Lee to follow Kaien, feel free to do that Laz. I had no idea how else to handle the fall of the arena. Hope this works.))

Everything had spiraled down as Lyre tried to make her way forward, burned fingers clutching a large piece of glass tight enough to draw blood and her only defense against a mutant. A few people darted past her screaming and she jerked away head snapping up at the mutant who stopped a few feet in front of her with his hands clenched tightly. Heaving just as much as she was, and her deer in headlights expression had the mutant take in her appearance before scoffing and darting around her to chase back after the people and she warily watched his fading form through the crumbling arena. Even if Lyre wanted to, she wasn't in any condition to try and stop him from most likely killing those people and she clutched the glass tight. The throbbing headache she had since the beginning of the arena had only gotten worse and it made her world spin heavily and a feeling of nausea threaten to throw up anything she had in her stomach - which was next to nothing.
Like a surreal experience the throbbing was suddenly gone and the squelch of someone stepping into the mud near her made its way through the chaos and to her ears and she whirled around on wounded feet, lifting the glass into the air to strike the person. Grey eyes wide as she stared at Kaien before her, his form large enough in front of her to block our Leann's tiny form should she have followed. The glass tumbling from her grasp and sinking into the mud beside her, ignoring the blood that trailed down wounded fingers. "You're okay." She sounded slightly relieved, but he seemed to be in shock at her appearance and she couldn't blame him. About to spout nonsense that she was fine when a dagger nipped his ear bringing him back to the situation at hand it seemed. Her brain working sluggishly to keep up with the words coming from his mouth and before she could fully comprehend she let out a loud hiss as he snatched her up from the mud. About to protest when another piece of the ceiling came crashing down not to far off and effectively silenced her, Lyre didn't kill someone just to die a few minutes later from a crumbling arena. So with trembling arms she obeyed his order and wrapped wounded arms around his neck and hesitantly threaded burned fingers together to keep herself from jarring to much in his arms.
Grey eyes trying to catch the pink haired girl but as Kaien turned toward a particular direction, with orders to follow him but she couldn't tell if the girl was following or not and attempted to keep herself as still as possible in his arms. The motion of running rubbed against her legs and it irritated the skin but she bit the inside of her cheek and kept herself as quiet as possible. The dust that became the new makeshift rain made it hard to breathe and Kaien's coughing had her wince as she tried to hold back her own choking breaths. It had felt like an eternity before they were spit out into a small park and Lyre gasped in the fresh air through choking gasps as Kaien set her down on a bench. Keeping only her bottom on the edge of the bench as to not aggravate anything on the rough surface and she let out haggard coughs and with each her side spiked with pain. Lyre didn't even need to look to know that she was sporting a nice disfigured yellowish-blue bruise on her side from the rough impact of being tossed onto a rock like nothing more than a toy being tossed aside.
"Are you okay?" Considering circumstances, Lyre actually thought she wasn't that bad off. She obviously wasn't in the best condition but she was alive and that was a lot more then probably a lot of people could say, Lady luck had never favored her but it seemed like whatever deity was up there liked her enough to at least keep her alive. So with a jerky nod, she answered his question that yes, she was okay and leaned back lightly against the bench as she no longer coughed or sneezed from the dust and just took in the peaceful area and chirping of the crickets like a soft melody. As he stated he would take her to a hospital through ragged breathing, probably not just from the dust but from carrying her through a collapsing building as well. Despite what most would say she was anything but light as a feather, she was heavy with muscle despite her tiny form carrying her through a collapsing building was probably anything but easy with her weighing him down.
A sense of gratefulness spread through her core, temporarily drowning out the pain as she slowly gazed over at him before looking back toward her feet and leaning forward. Ready to heft herself off the bench but catching her bloody and burned fingers made her pause as she stared at them for a moment, allowing them to drop into her lap as she gazed on ahead. "Thank you." Her voice raspy, not from disuse but from exhaustion and pain. It was taking a lot to keep herself awake, her body sagging and only getting more fatigued as she endured the burning sensation that continued through her limbs like liquid fire. "You didn't have to save me, and I appreciate it."
Slowly and carefully she placed all her weight on her legs and winced as she pulled herself up, vision swimming for a few seconds and nearly causing her to fall over but she righted herself in time and she took a step forward. "The hospital is that way, right?" She had been to this particular park only once or twice before, the area was rather unfamiliar to her but if he pointed out the direction she would start her long walk there. He didn't have to save her, and he didn't have to take her to the hospital either, he had officially voided their friendship or whatever you could call such a temporary thing. Acquaintance? Lyre almost shrugged to her own thoughts, shoulders sagging instead. Kaien seemed well off, besides the mud, dust, and fatigue he didn't look too beat up. Going to the hospital would probably mean they would contact the cops because she couldn't just walk in with her condition and spout the truth, she would probably have to make something up. Kaien probably wanted as little to do with authority as possible, otherwise he probably would have contacted them at his first escape. Lyre could make it to the hospital on her own, at least she figured she could - while it might take her awhile she would eventually get there.
Her grey eyes flicked up to the practically subdued pink haired girl, a shell of her former insane self as she stood there limply. Lyre wondered if she was okay but another part of her wanted to roll her eyes, of course the girl probably wasn't okay. Whatever has happened to her in the arena seemed to just have officially exhausted any attempt to secure herself and save herself. Probably exhausted from trying as well, but there wasn't a whole lot Lyre could do for the girl, that would probably be left up to Kaien if he chose to.
"The hospital will probably call the cops when they see me." She paused, grey eyes glancing at him through her hair which had long since fallen from their pigtails. "I'm assuming you don't want to interact with them, so I should be able to make it there on my own." She paused once, throat tightening as she looked away - she didn't want to burden him any longer. "Thank you, for saving me." She took another step to limp toward the exit of the park and make her way to the hospital. The pain flaring up and her vision blurred with tears but she willed them away, chanting to herself to keep going, that just a bit farther and she could rest. Just endure a bit more. Keep going.
((Feel free to ignore the Lee parts if she doesn't follow, Lazarus.))

Words. There were words floating in the chaos and they were shaped in the form of a very true sentiment. They needed to leave, and leave quickly, but even though Lee was able to internally acknowledge Kaien's words, she, herself, seemed unable to act. The action from before had disrupted her manic veil, allowing full view of her dazed, blank expression, and it wasn't until Kaien actually pulled her up that she seemed able to "come back" to some form of reality. She offered no resistance to being pulled through the mud, and did not seem to recognize Lyre once they arrived at the wounded girl. She blinked when she was given the katana but, with no other option presenting itself, she gingerly held on to the sword. During the exchange between the other two, Leann simply stood, her gaze locked on the blade she was holding.
Thus, the escape began. Lee followed because she was told to and, unburdened except for the sword, she was able to keep up despite apparently lacking any of the anxiety their situation should have inflicted on her. Her wounds were largely superficial, and the only hindrance she dealt with, aside from the dust, were the mud-covered heels she had somehow managed to keep on during the ordeal. Still, when they finally made it outside, she was a sight just as ridiculous and alarming as the other two. Mud, blood, and dust-covered and wielding a katana, she might have appeared as an undead, vengeful bride - like some oddball cross-over of Kill Bill and Michael Jackson's Thriller. She stopped moving only when Kaien stopped, and she stood there, blank and in silence, when he began assessing Lyre.
But then, he dropped a trigger word: "Hospital."
CLANG![/i]
The katana slipped from her grasp, rattling on the concrete of the sidewalk at her feet. Her gasp was hidden by the metallic clang, but her expression had instantly come back to life. It began as shock, twisted into worry, and then melted into pure fear. Her hands started shaking.
"H-hospit... M-mom! No!"
And, with no consideration for the other two, she broke into a sprint in the direction of the hospital. This new, panicked adrenaline shot vanquished her fatigue, and she ran as fast as she could - until she made it outside of Kaien's nullifying sphere of influence. Abruptly, her very being morphed, and with a sonic boom of a thunderclap as accompaniment, she became her element. The split second before she "jumped", Kaien and Lyre would be able to see that, even as green electricity, she maintained a humanoid shape, but then she launched into the air, becoming a stream of electricity, flashing into a nearby transformer and causing it to explode with a shower of sparks. Down the power lines she went, leaving crackling green electricity along the wires as she raced, in vain, to the hospital.
((Woot! >_> So, I'll start a Do Not Resuscitate II thread at the hospital. Dunno which characters would intend to participate in it, though. e_e; Huzzah for the fall of the Wild Diamonds, though! xD ))

Kaien stared at the ground in front of him, decidedly not looking at either of the females in his company. They were free again and the sensation was spreading through him like wildfire. He was free to go wherever he pleased, do whatever he wanted. The light that was raining down on them from the streetlamp almost made him want to shy away, because he didn’t want to be exposed to any more spotlights. It also gave him a sense of being out in the open and noticeable. The paranoia of being pursued had not fully left him yet.
His thoughts were interrupted by Lyre’s words and he glanced in her direction. At first, he didn’t know how to reply to her words. There was a detached coldness behind them, the nature of which his tired mind couldn’t gasp immediately. He had forgotten all about voiding their association, for it had been an act to suit the circumstances. To him, they were supposed to be where they were before... everything that had happened afterwards. Lyre was up and asking about the hospital when Lee dropped the katana he had gotten in the arena and started running in the right direction, inadvertently answering Lyre’s question about direction. With eyes blank of weariness, Kaien watched Leann literally become lightning and disappear into the distance along power lines, a “Wait” dying in his throat before it could be uttered. He couldn’t ask her to wait. There was nothing for her to wait for. The red-eyed male hadn’t even started processing all that had happened in the last stage of the arena and he didn’t know how it would impact him once he did. Besides that, from what he had understood, checking on her mother was the most important thing at the moment.
After Lee disappeared from view, Kaien returned his attention to Lyre. His intent to get up and come to her side to pursue the thought of helping her to the hospital was arrested by her words. The cops were always on his mind and it was true that he didn’t want to encounter them. From a cage to another cage wasn’t an option. He had planned to be out of the hospital before they were even called, but with an escape of these proportions, for there were bound to be other wounded mutants fleeing the crumbling underground dome, the police may well be there by the time they arrived. Kaien remained seated and his exhaustion thanked him for it. He gave a little nod when Lyre assumed he didn’t want to run into the cops, eyes on her when she thanked him stoically again.
There were many things he could have said, even wanted to, somewhere underneath it all, but none of them seemed quite adequate to utter. So he didn’t say anything. He didn’t follow Lyre, but he did get up to pick up the fallen katana. It wasn’t like the one he had lost, this one was dull from being forced into the rock and out, but it would have to serve until he could get a new one. Without another thought or another word, Kaien disappeared into the night, in the opposite direction from Lyre’s path or any hospital. All he wanted to do was get home and collapse.
((Yay for the end of plot! I’m going to start a thread for Kaien and Aithne now and he won’t be going to the hospital at all, so he can’t be in Lee’s thread.))
