Eluard's hand forced Lee to once again look at him, and when she did, her expression was one of doubt. The doubt came with his reply that she was not a monster. Despite his tone, she did not need to agree or disagree with the command to not let others tell her who or what she was - for she, herself, had determined that she was a monster; not someone else. She didn't say this, however. She was still too numb to make a proper response.
Her stillness remained as Eluard turned and made to leave. She could not fathom what he meant - not need to last forever in her struggle? She thought, perhaps, it was a promise of assistance, and while the sentiment was nice, she couldn't understand why it would be made or how it could come to be. Still, she had not the energy to argue. He wished her luck and departed.
A little while later, the nurse returned with her backpack. She'd had to stuff Eluard's vest inside her dress in order to hide it, and it was sheer luck that allowed her to get away with it undetected. She was given a quick look over from the nurse, handed a vial of pain killers, and allowed to go on her way. The next morning, she would be at the hospital... like she was almost every day.
