His back was turned to the command and he had no intention of disobeying it. The skin around his eyes tightened during her rebuke. “You don’t know nothin’!” The words rang through his head, but he didn’t have time to ponder them much before someone interrupted their argument.
Kaien turned around to face the guard but the man was already headed for Leann. A fight started, one he had no intention to participate in, so he simply moved to the side, closer to the door but at the same time away from standing in front of it. He watched the battle with absurd calm in his eyes. Kaien could feel no remorse for the injuries the men received – they deserved the worst just for working here. While the fight happened though, Kaien felt just one thing – cold. His entire being was becoming glacial and uncaring. If his words were going to be thrown in his face after inciting a violent outburst, then he had no place saying anything. Right now, she really did seem crazy and the days of fights, torture, hunger and general lack of comfort weren’t helping him persist in apologizing after being insulted and discredited.
But he didn’t feel anything. Not angry, or disappointed or in the mood to make comebacks of his own. He was just numb and empty and completely alone again. The only person he had thought to be able to rely on in some small measure down here had turned on him over words and impressions. The moment the fight was done he turned to exit, stepping over guards as he went, enduring the hot pain that shot through his injured leg whenever he used it but soliciting its assistance with masochistic vengeance. Kaien wasn’t going to say anything, he wasn’t going to approach her again and his heart was a fresh chunk of rock because of it.
He would have walked away slowly through the first door available to him, ready to actually fight Leann if she chose to attack him in her angry rampage. What he really wanted to do, however, was to “stay away from her” as she had requested.
They wouldn’t meet or talk again by his initiative.
